Where can you learn sign language in Cherbourg?

This week on occasion International Sign Language Day (this Friday, September 23) a world day of the deaf (Saturday, September 24) we were wondering if we could learn sign language in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (Manche).

Invisible disability

They are not always noticed because their handicap is invisible. However, an estimated 6 to 7 million people are deaf or hard of hearing in France.
Isolated by their disability, they tend to withdraw even more into themselves. It’s a vicious cycle…

For Jennifer Lordel, who createdthe company Accès’Signes in Cherbourg, people who are deaf or hard of hearing are not given enough attention, their disability is not necessarily taken into account: “There is a lack of understanding among hearing people. It is better, but there is still progress to be made, especially in administration or care.

This former doctor in the field of neurology converted precisely because she faced difficulties in communicating with some patients. Today, Jennifer accompanies deaf people in their efforts.

We live in a very noisy society and we don’t look at people enough anymore, our noses are often glued to our mobile phones. When you speak in sign language, you have to look at the other person’s mouth, hands, body. A real exchange takes place.

Where to learn sign language in Cherbourg?

If you want learn sign language (and be careful, we insist, it really is a language in itself, not a “language”!).Association of the Deaf of Nord-Cotentin (ASNC) is here for you!

Frédéric Binet-Mauger welcomes people who want to learn this language, on Tuesdays (beginners), Wednesdays (2nd year) and Thursdays (advanced), from 18:00 to 20:00, at Maison Françoise-Giroud, rue du Neufbourg.

She also teaches twice a week at a private school that has included sign language in its curriculum. Frédéric, who is married to a deaf person, in addition to the courses, also accompanies about forty people throughout the Cotentin on their steps.
