For more than 30 years, you have been known as a comedian in the guise of Maria Bodinová, less as a musician and singer. What is your experience in this field?

It was through a song in 1989 that I took my first steps on stage in a restaurant show in Tours called P’tit Québec. I was an orderly at the time and after the owner of this restaurant heard me sing, he offered to hire me for a year. Of course I accepted… my dream was coming true! I am completely self-taught in singing and music. However, for this new singing trick I called Didier Buisson, a great musician and virtuoso accordionist. He’s from Tourangeau, we’ve known each other for at least 35 years, since we used to jam when we first started, in the old Tours cabarets. He has been playing the accordion since he was 6 years old. He was a professor at the conservatory, accompanied many artists and created several musical performances. He perfectly masters the art of instrumental and vocal arrangements. On top of all that, Didier is a wonderful friend, full of great humanity. He knows how to be funny and discreet when necessary. Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better partner! Here he arranges the show’s instrumental and vocal covers and does 2nd voices. He gave me a lot to do in the trial periods and I have to admit that I struggled a bit at times, but it was worth it. Since then, it has been an endless joy for me to share the stage with him. He made great progress for me.

Is this show a homecoming?

I’ve been waiting years to get back on stage and sing. I never get tired of making people laugh, but making them sing is magic!

Since when did you create this show and why do you call it “ordinary”?

While in prison, Les Bodin’s and I wrote and filmed Les Bodin’s in Thailand, released in November 2021 and seen by 1,635,000 viewers. Like all our fellow artists, we have had to stop our Zenith tour with our Les Bodin’s Grandeur Nature show during this harrowing period of many months. Then I found myself at home, in my countryside in Touraine, and I told myself that instead of depressingly waiting for the theaters to reopen, it was now or never to create this singing tour that I had always dreamed of. For several weeks, at first by myself, I rehearsed dozens of songs. I often went to the woods all morning and sang at the top of my lungs. Like sports, singing has always been an essential part of my physical and mental health. When I sing, things happen inside me that make me feel good and make my life more beautiful. I think it’s chemical too!

After several weeks of working alone to pre-select 40 songs and rehearse them (vocals, guitars and ukulele), I called my friend Didier back and we started rehearsing. I had to work a lot during this period because Didier is a demanding and strict “teacher”. That’s good, exactly what I was looking for. When we go through moments of doubt in our jobs, it’s work that helps us remove the doubt! The title “Ordinary” quickly caught on. It’s the first song of the concert, a Robert Charlebois song that talks about how difficult it is to keep our feet on the ground when we’re doing our job as pedestrians. I really like this text. It is also a way for me to announce the color, to tell the public that they will see me without a mask, with an exposed face, without artificiality, naked, as a normal guy!

Are the titles you play compositions or covers?

There are about twenty songs, mainly covers of French and Canadian songs, interspersed with lyrics and moments of exchange with the audience. It’s a joint concert. A moment of hospitality. This is exactly what I wanted, I couldn’t ask for more. What we achieved with Didier exceeds all my expectations! I’ve started writing my own songs, but it’s still a bit early to deliver them to you. In this concert, we evoke life, death, doubts that have crossed me during these 30 years on the stage and these 58 years of my life. Love of course, children who teach us so much, friends, shit, injustices and the chance to live despite everything! And of course, in the middle of it all, that essential laugh to take the necessary step back!

Will we find a bit of Marie Bodinová on stage?

Of course, since Maria has been a part of me, she hasn’t let me go and she never will. I still have a lot to talk about with him. It is no accident that I have spent 30 years of my life embodying this character. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always liked older ones. I never get bored with them. It is absolutely and regularly necessary to take the time to stop and listen to the elders. They have so much to give us and we have so much to give them. In the years to come, love, brotherhood, mutual aid will be the only solution left to us. Above all, don’t confuse your priorities!

How did this casino programming come about?

24 years ago (I think), when I started Marie Bodin’s solo adventure on stages in France and at the Avignon festival, I was approached by Serge Bretel to invite me to participate in the Andain’ries festival that had just started. in La Chapelle-d’Andaine. From the first meeting when I arrived I very quickly understood that Serge and his group of cheerful colleagues are good people and that they do things for the right reasons… in this case to bring people together, laugh and have a good time. together! Then we regularly returned to the festival with the Bodins and in the jury. We naturally became friends and despite our busy schedules, we always knew how to get together to share a good time. When he learned through mutual friends that I was preparing a singing tour, he immediately invited me to come introduce him to Bagnoles. It’s a beautiful gift he’s giving me! Thank you my Serge for the trust!
