If all cities French Regional Natural Park Gâtinais (PNR) are obliged to switch off public lighting at night, other municipalities could be tempted to do so in view of the savings achieved. In 2016, yes Perthes-en-Gatinais (Seine-et-Marne), which is one of the first municipalities to collapse.

Savings of 40% for those cities that limit public lighting

“From May 25 to August 31, we went even further than the PNR commitments, because we cut the lighting from 23:00 to 6:00 from May 25 to August 31,” explains Philippe Macaigne, deputy mayor of Perthes-en -Gâtinais, in charge of works. .

Outside of this period, the lighting is adjusted according to the day and sunshine. “In addition to the environment, it generates savings for the city’s finances,” he continues. Since then, people have gotten used to it and we have had no complaints since the time slots have been extended. »

In the PNR, we confirm the economic aspect of the measure, as it is applied by 70 municipalities in Essonne and Seine-et-Marne. “A municipality that turns off the lights for 6 hours at night achieves approximately 50% energy savings, which corresponds to approximately 40% savings for municipal finances,” according to the PNR.

More cities will join

Other municipalities outside the park are also starting to ask, such as Varennes-Jarcy (Essonne), to consider switching off public lighting. In Seine-et-Marne, the city of Longueville is getting ready to jump.

“To help save energy and reduce nighttime disturbance to wildlife, we have decided to cut off public lighting from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.,” announced Mayor Philippe Fortin. We chose this time slot to allow passengers on the first and last train of the day to enter the station completely safely. »

In this municipality, located near Provins, the measure will come into effect on September 19.
