Faced with a combination of a bronchiolitis epidemic and a glaring shortage of medical personnel, Fr emergencies of the Le Mans (Sarthe) Hospital Center they are saturated.
The situation also associated with repeated closing emergency cases from other hospitals in the department: this was the case at the beginning of the week at La Ferté-Bernard Hospital.
300 patients a day
Le Mans Hospital is facing saturation of its pediatric, adult and gynecological emergency services.
A situation explained by the bronchiolitis epidemic and the emergency closure in Sarthe.
CHM’s three emergency departments see an average of 300 patients per day (including 180 in the adult emergency department). Of these patients, 95 must be hospitalized on average every day. The need for hospitalization after emergency admission is increasing, while the number of CHM beds remains unchanged.
These three emergency services are the only ones open every day and 24 hours per day in Sarthe.
Enhanced patient transfers
For unblock emergency services, CHM organizes itself with other hospitals on the ward using available beds “to best meet the needs of the hospital”.
Le Mans Hospital encourages patients’ families to accept transfer to another hospital if suggested by the medical team, even if the hospital is outside the patient’s residential area.
“Transfer for hospitalization to another facility with available beds can reduce the risks associated with very long waits on stretchers in the emergency room,” CHM points out.
