The municipality decided to implement its school catering projects in such a way as to spend the minimum.
Saint-Pierre, good student in waste
School catering offers a five-component menu with appetizers, main dishes – with side dishes, dairy products, dessert. They are confirmed by the dining committee (composed of two elected officials, a parent representative and the catering department with the advice of a dietician). Preference is given to fresh, organic, short-cut products.
The municipality was also on the hunt for waste, having just received very good and encouraging news from the company Terraléo, a partner in the recovery of food waste. Thus, while ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency) estimates the loss per day and per child at 120 grams, the schoolchildren of Saint-Pierrais wasted “only” 51 g. the same size as Saint-Pierre, far from the approximately 7 kg recorded in our city,” rejoiced Nadia Mezrar, the city’s mayor.
No increase for families
From September 2021, the city introduced affordable prices for all, allowing the most modest households to benefit from very affordable prices ranging from €0.70 to €1. Thanks to word of mouth, 800 students go to school canteens today.
Finally, Élisabeth Vandel, the new assistant for education, elaborated: “The cost of food is increasing, the price of butter and milk has almost doubled in one year, etc. However, the municipality has decided not to increase the rates for the coming year. »
