It is on the ground of his last match French Cup, almost a year ago, Stade Malherbe Caen will return to the favorite competition of French footballers, this Saturday, October 29, 2022. Caen will face Saint-Malo at the stadium that lost in the seventh round against Dinan, a National 3 club, last season. Since the beginning of the millennium, Malherbe has alternated between very good and very bad.

December 15, 2001: crash at La Montagnarde

This is probably the biggest (sporting) failure in the long history of Stade Malherbe Caen in the Coupe de France. That day, Malherbe (D2) benefited from an extremely favorable draw in the 32ᵉ final. After leaving Cherbourg (CFA) and Beauvais (D2) the trip to Brittany must be a formality. When Mathieu Bodmer opened the scoring shortly before half-time, the team with Cédric Hengbart, Franck Dumas and Xavier Gravelain were heading for a logical success. La Montagnarde plays in the Division d’Honneur. In the second third, it’s drama. Caen is eliminated in the 90th minute (2:1). “During the match, Gravelaine did not stop chasing us,” Romuald Jaffré told the decisive scorer much later. Team. When they opened the scoring just before half-time, he said like a kid: “That’s it. It wasn’t too bad, but we didn’t need much. »

January 7, 2006: fatal error in Longuenesse

Caen, winners of Tremblay and Locminé in the previous rounds, were again lucky in the scratch, inheriting Longuenesse, a Promotion d’Honneur formation, in the 32nd final. On the pitch, Malehrbe did the job as they won 4-0 thanks to goals from Benoît Lesoimier, Reynald Lemaître, Bruno Grougi and Ronald Zubar. Only here the club ignored an important point of the regulation. Franck Dumas only fielded six players who played at least one of the two necessary matches. The minimum allowed was 7. Longuenesse’s reserve logically went through, despite all the appeals Caen filed. Stade Malherbe is phased out on the green carpet.

1 March 2018: performance against Lyon

Stade Malherbe reached the semi-finals of the Coupe de France for the first time in its history. And how! A goal from Ismaël Diomandé allows Malherbistes to eliminate Olympique Lyonnais at the Ornano Stadium (1:0). The atmosphere is spectacular. Unfortunately, Caen will face Paris in the semi-final, with Chambly and Les Herbiers in the other semi-final. Caennais will be eliminated (3-1).

February 10, 2021: no complex against PSG

Stade Malherbe Caen hosts Paris Saint-Germain in the 32nd final behind closed doors, at least officially (a few VIPs are in the box). PSG brought out the heavy artillery, especially around Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, but only won by a small goal (0:1). Caennais had the best chances in the first half, led by the very young Johann Lepenant. When the game resumed, it was Moïse Kean who made the difference for the visitors. Despite interesting chances at the end of the match – but also a lot of saves by Sullivan Péan – Caen did not achieve their performance.

November 13, 2021: when nothing goes…

After coming close to relegation to the National a few months earlier, Caen thought they had restarted the machine with the arrival of Stéphane Moulin in charge. But in this month of November, the Caennais cannot. In their first steps in the Coupe de France, they remain six games without a win ahead of Dinan (N3). The home team opened the scoring in the third minute. Caen struggle but manage to equalize nicely through Nuno Da Costa. The penalty shootout will prove fatal for Malherbistes.
