Tuberculosis, a contagious disease that is transmitted mainly through the air, increased in cases worldwide last year.
Tuberculosis killed 1.6 million people last year
It has been in remission for about twenty years, but is coming back, which worries health professionals. Infectious disease caused by mycobacteria, tuberculosis mainly affects the lungs but it can also affect other organs. The Pasteur Institute reminds that it is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the world. In 2020, 4,606 cases of tuberculosis were declared in France.
One of the 10 most common causes of death worldwide
The World Health Organization reports this figure: tuberculosis killed 1.6 million people worldwide in 2021. Director of the WHO Global Tuberculosis Program Dr. Tereza Kasaeva adds: “Unfortunately, last year, for the first time in more than two decades, we saw an increase in the number of people developing the disease and its drug-resistant form.E”.
Philippines, Indonesia, India and Burma
In 2021, about 10.6 million people worldwide became ill. Four countries are affected more than others: PhilippinesI’IndonesiaIndia and Burma. The incidence of the disease increased by 3.6% between 2020 and 2021.
The main indicator is a prolonged cough
Both adults and children can be affected tuberculosis whose symptoms are most often fever, night sweats and weight loss, but the main marker is a long-lasting cough. A poorly treated disease can lead to death.
